BENEFITS OF REGULAR CONSUMPTION OF OKRO/OKRA (Abelmoschus esculentus)
INTRODUCTION: Okra is also known as lady’s fingers, bamia, bhindi or gumbo. It is one of the popular nutritious vegetables of North-East African origin. It belongs to the plant family as hibiscus and cotton. Its edible seedpods are plucked when they are green, tender and at immature stage.
IMPORTANCE:
Okro/okra prevents colon cancer because it has cleansing ability and as a result cleanses intestinal tract, thereby reducing the risk of colon cancer.
It prevents diabetes due to the presence of eugeniol that fights diabetes, stabilizes blood sugar level by delaying sugar absorption from the intestines.
It prevents constipation(hardened feces in the intestines)
Prevents anaemia – the iron content of okra forms heamoglobin in the blood and prevents anaemia (reduction in the capacity of the blood transport to body tissues. It is also rich in vitamin k that helps in blood coagulation
Aids weight loss- okra has low caloric value and as a result it is a great addition when losing weight
Lowers cholesterol level – it has soluble fiber and pectin that helps to lower serum cholesterol level by altering the production of bite in the intestine.
It improves immunity – okra is rich in vitamin c and this help in fighting cold and cough. Apart from vitamin c, it also contains essential minerals like magnesium, manganese, calcium and iron that fight against free radicals, hence promoting an overall healthy immune system.
Improves eyesight – vitamin A is needed for a good eyesight and protects against age related eyes disorder and it is present in okra. Eye related diseases such as cataracts can also be averted if one takes it regularly.
Aids healthy pregnancy – okra contains foliate which is an essential nutrient that improves the development of the foetus brain. It plays an important role in the neural tube formation of the foetus from the fourth to twelfth week of pregnancy.
Fights against dandruff and lice – boil water with horizontally cut okra, strain on cooling, squeeze half a lemon and use as a hair rinse to remove dandruffs and lice.
