Communication Skills
5Cs OF TWENTY FIRST CENTURY TEACHING AND LEARNING
The traditional method of teaching whereby the teacher does all the talking and students are passive listeners is not helping our students. This is clearly seen in the type of results we get from the students year in year out in their SSCE results. Albert Einstein said that " insanity it is to do something the same way over and over again and be expecting different results " He who expects different results must be ready to go the extra mile and do something different. With these 5Cs teachers of this century can impart and influence our students to perform better in their academics. In fact, those establishing school need to consider the students capabilities with respect to these 5cs before going into school founding.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Literacy ability of students are being overlooked nowadays in our public schools. Imagine a student in SS1 that cannot read and write. I wonder how such students moved from Basic one to Basic nine without being noticed. Something is wrong somewhere and this needs be looked into by our education authorities controlling the basic levels. Communication is in two ways; written and verbal. Meaning students should be able to express themselves verbally and should be able to write it down. Teacher should make use of the communication skills regularly and constantly in their lesson presentations. Students should be given task to do in the classroom for a particular period of time. After which the teacher elicit responses from from them group by group. While one gives the answers verbally, other will be asked to write it on the board. By so doing, the teacher develops their spelling ability and ability to express themselves verbally. This will be possible if the teacher chunks his lessons objective by objective,
